It was transformational for me, as a parent to an Ethiopian child, to be so warmly embraced by Ethiopian adults who can teach "Ha" her culture so much better than I can. It makes me even more motivated to reach out when I know that I won't be rejected by other Ethiopians. Thank you so much for all that you did. For loving all of our children enough to sacrifice the time, effort, etc to give this to all of us! "Ha" loved every minute and has already said next years camp should be a week long (I agree!!). | "I am writing to thank you for all your hard work organizing the Heritage and Culture Camp in Harrisonburg. It was one of the highlights of my family's summer… As we were walking to the parking lot, I put my arm on his (non-Ethiopian sibling) shoulder and said, "You know, a thing I really like about you is that you're so comfortable about other people's cultures." I was imagining him in that circle of children at the bonfire singing "Wendeme Jakob.". He said without hesitation, "It's not another culture, mom. It's our family's culture." |
